Maximising Functionality in Compact Spaces in the Intersection of Originality with Original Decor
20 May 24
The common challenge in interior design for flats in Hong Kong lies in space planning, as compact flats demand a delicate balance between maximizing functionality and maintaining a sense of spaciousness. The choice of furniture, colour palette, and layout in such environments is crucial for creating an inviting and comfortable living space. Hei Design excels in providing creative solutions that make the most out of every inch.
The subject unit is located in Phase 2A of University Hill, a luxury residential development consisting of 5 medium-rise blocks and around 600 peaceful residential units. Our client, the owner of this modest 2-bedroom property spanning approximately 400 sq. ft., anticipates a renovation of this newly acquired canvas into a modern marvel of simplicity and luxury.
Our design philosophy revolves around a narrative of modern tranquillity where simplicity harmonises with sophistication. Embracing the client's preference, the colour palette embodies a symphony of neutrals — light grey and warm wooden accents — creating an atmosphere of relaxation and tranquillity. Delicate hints of marble in fixtures introduce an element of opulence, heightening the overall aesthetics.
Within this cozy living room, the kitchen island table takes centre stage, setting the scene for cherished moments. Its bold placement seamlessly bridges the kitchen and living area, transforming it into a statement piece that not only encourages social interaction but also adds a touch of style.
The absence of a designated dining area in a limited space often leads to makeshift solutions. Homeowners may resort to using foldable tables or constantly moving traditional dining tables around, disrupting the visual flow of an open layout and lacking the cohesive interior style desired by those with a keen eye for aesthetics. In this scenario, our interior designer creatively utilises the open kitchen by incorporating an extendable island table that offers both practicality and elegance, eliminating the need for constant rearrangements.
The decision to add an island table in a confined space may raise eyebrows at first glance. However, thanks to our client's trust in our vision, both parties recognise the transformative potential of integrating a central island table. A standard island table would not suffice; instead, our tasteful bespoke island table featuring a marble top, ample storage, and wine cellar elevates the space to a new level of luxury. Its presence adds a touch of sophistication, seamlessly blending the culinary and dining areas for a harmonious and stylish atmosphere.
Venturing into the living room, the mantra is space optimisation without compromising the modern style. Rather than relying on decorative renovation items, the design adds touch relaxation-beckoning soft furnishings, like the minimalist sofa adorned with soft cushions and coffee table, and subtle yet functional furniture, such as the sleek full-length cabinet with LED strips next to the TV.
Materials and textures play a key role in bringing the concept of simple luxury to fruition. The wall covering in the living room mimics an artistic finish at a fraction of the cost, while the TV wall features ceramic tiles with a cement texture, perfectly complementing the modern aesthetics.
Adding a final touch of sophistication, the carefully selected art piece on the wall brings an artistic flair, infusing the interior with aesthetics that enhance the overall modern ambience without overwhelming the room.
In the master bedroom, a minimalist approach reigns supreme, with bespoke storage solutions maintaining the clean, uncluttered aesthetic. Taking advantage of the room's lofty ceiling height, the custom set of cabinetries stands tall as a wardrobe, a practical display unit for figurines and a bedstand for gadgets. The cabinet at the bottom adopts a black mirror design to create a visual illusion of it emerging from the ground. Embracing a neutral colour palette of soft whites, light browns, and muted tones, the bedroom exudes a serene and airy atmosphere, enhancing the feeling of openness and tranquillity.
Lighting holds a key role in elevating the interior's ambience, setting the stage for a welcoming and peaceful retreat. LED light strips lining the undersides of the wardrobes add a modern touch of elegance, softly illuminating the room and highlighting the bespoke wardrobe's design. The gentle radiance fosters a sense of calmness, expanding the perceived space and inviting relaxation. With adjustable brightness settings, the LED strip allows for personalised lighting options, catering to different moods within the bedroom sanctuary.
To replicate the bedroom's tranquil ambience, a soft and neutral colour palette sets the tone for the study area, creating a backdrop conducive to focus and relaxation. Furnished with clean-lined and cozy pieces such as a spacious desk and elevated bookshelves, the study area ensures a productive workspace.
Nothing is better than natural light to enhance the airy and refreshing ambience of a room. The study desk is therefore strategically positioned to the window to maximise natural light, fostering an invigorating workspace. Complementing the natural light, the ambient lighting on the bookshelves adds a layer of warmth and visual interest to the space. The combination of natural and artificial lighting ensures a well-lit environment and enhances the functionality of the study room while contributing to its overall design harmony as well.
With a generously sized cabinet providing ample storage, the study room remains organized and clutter-free. The display shelves within the cabinet add a personalised touch, infusing the space with character and charm while showcasing cherished items tastefully. As a study room in University Hill, adjacent to Hong Kong's famous university, it is very much ideal to exude a sense of art and agility!
